2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Comes After Mixed Response
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure updated staff about this strategic move through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a more defined game identity.
The president expressed that the team is now refining the project with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
The news mirrors a similar action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.
Below is the entire text from the president's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was enlightening. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. Following some time of talks, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in receiving Ben next week. We are all excited to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the months to come.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Head
The appointee currently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Challenge the competition with unique powers, risks, and tests that change every match. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively go big, put it on the line, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or platforms, but fans can anticipate additional details as creation progresses.
